Turned on a lathe, coloured with lac
Channapatna, a small town between Bengaluru and Mysuru, has turned wooden toys for over two hundred years. The families we buy from shape soft hale wood on a lathe and finish it with sticks of lac coloured by turmeric, indigo and kumkum - so the shine is pressed in by friction, not painted on. Edges are rounded, nothing is glued that a baby could pull off, and the colours are safe for teething mouths.

Four checks on every toy
Every toy we sell is tested to IS 9873, the Indian standard for toy safety, and carries the BIS mark. Then we check it ourselves.

- Small parts, under threeToys for babies and toddlers go through our small-parts cylinder - anything that fits does not go on the 0-2 shelf.
- Colours and edgesPaints and lacquers must be certified free of lead and heavy metals. We run a thumb along every edge of a new toy.
- Honest age labelsIf a puzzle is too hard for its box age, we relabel it. The age badge you see is ours, not just the maker’s.

Smooth, safe and still bright

A shop window on Manek Lane
Kantilal Patel opened Khilona Ghar in 1987 as a single shutter on Manek Lane, selling spinning tops, tin cars and Channapatna toys he brought back from a trip to Karnataka. Children pressed their noses to the window, and the window became the point of the shop.
His daughter Nandini runs it now, with the same rule he started with: if a toy is not safe, well made and fun after the first week, it does not go on the shelf. Every toy is checked against its age label, and anyone on the floor will happily play with it in front of you.
