Thirty-nine years of choosing, testing and wrapping toys on Manek Lane, Navrangpura.
Khilona Ghar began in 1987 as a one-shutter shop selling spinning tops, tin cars and lacquered wooden toys. Kantilal Patel had found the toys on a trip through Channapatna and could not believe nobody in Ahmedabad sold them. Within a few years the shop had a reputation for two things: the window display, and a shopkeeper who would sit on the floor and play with your child while you decided.
Today we stock toys for children from birth to twelve, arranged by age and by the kind of play they invite - stacking and pulling for babies, pretend play and ride-ons for preschoolers, puzzles and board games for the rule-makers, and STEM kits for the ones who take everything apart. Every toy is tested to IS 9873 and carries the BIS mark, and we check the certificate and the age label ourselves before anything reaches a shelf. Toys for under-threes are checked again for small parts.
We still buy wooden toys direct from fourteen families in Channapatna, paying for each batch before it is turned. Gift wrapping is free and done by hand, birthday cards are written out by whoever is on the counter, and if you are not sure what to buy, you can send us the age and a budget on WhatsApp and we will suggest three toys we would give ourselves.
