Diwali, Janmashtami, Uttarayan - book early
Our busiest fortnight is the run-up to Diwali, when the kitchen runs two shifts and the chorafali sells out most afternoons. Janmashtami brings penda orders by the hundred, and Uttarayan means mathiya and chikki going out with every kite. Place festive and wedding orders at least four days ahead so we can cook to your date rather than to a shelf.

- Net weight, not packed weightThe tin, the tray and the paper are on us. What you pay for is what you can eat.
- Batch date on every packShelf life is printed in days, from four for penda to three months for khakhra.

Ninety minutes of besan in one kadai
Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 286 reviewsIn the kitchen
Four in the morning, one kadai at a time
The halwais start at four. Besan is sieved and rested, the ghee is brought to temperature slowly, and mohanthal is stirred in a single kadai for close to ninety minutes until it turns grainy and lets go of the sides. Kaju katli is rolled and cut by hand, never machine-pressed. Nothing is fried twice, and the oil in the farsan kadai is changed every single day.

The mohanthal my father used to bring home
Eleven Diwalis in a row now. The besan roast is proper - grainy, not fudgy, and you can smell the ghee when you open the tin. Ordered at 9 in the morning and it was at the house by evening.

Still crisp after three days in transit
Sent four kilos of fafda and gathiya to my son in Bengaluru. He said it arrived on the third day and was still loud. The tikha gathiya is genuinely spicy, which nobody else seems to manage.

Penda is excellent, plan around the four days
Real mawa, no doubt about it, and the kesar is not just colour. Only four days shelf life though, so time the order for the day of your puja rather than ordering ahead like I did.

Ordered sixty hampers for the office
Bulk order for staff Diwali gifts. They split the delivery across three addresses without fuss, wrote the cards by hand, and invoiced properly. The large tin looks far better than the price suggests.
