Our workshop
Kansa & Co. is a family workshop in Ahmedabad’s old city that makes brass, copper and kansa vessels for cooking and serving - and keeps re-tinning them for as long as they are used.
We make vessels for the stove and the table, not the puja shelf. Kadai, handi and tope are beaten from 1.2 mm food-grade brass sheet and lined with pure tin; copper bottles, jugs and matkas are left bare inside, as copper for water should be; kansa thalis, katoris and tumblers are cast from a 78:22 copper-tin bell metal and turned on a lathe until they ring.
Every alloy batch is tested on an XRF analyser for lead, arsenic and cadmium before it is worked, and every tin ingot is certified 99.9% pure. We print the batch on the care card in the box. If a test fails, the batch goes back to the foundry - we would rather run short in Diwali season than sell a plate we would not eat from.
Care is simple. Wash brass and kansa with mild soap or the old way, with ash, tamarind or lemon and salt; dry immediately; never cook sour food in unlined brass. Copper water vessels need a lemon-and-salt rub once a week. When the tin inside a pot wears thin, send it to us: re-tinning is how a kadai lasts fifty years.

What customers say
“My mother’s kadai came to Kansa & Co. for its first kalai in 1979. I sent it again this year with my own, and both came back gleaming inside with the weight written on a slip.”
“Ordered forty kansa katori sets for my daughter’s wedding. Every name was engraved correctly, they split the delivery across six cities, and the GST invoice was in my inbox the same day.”
“Finally a copper bottle that is actually unlacquered inside. The water tastes of nothing at all, which is the point.”
A reminder when your lining is due
One letter a month: care notes by season, new pieces from the anvil, and a nudge eighteen months after you buy tin-lined cookware so it never wears through.
