Before the monsoon, clay from the Ganga riverbank is shaped into discs and baked in kilns until it is bone dry. The baked earth goes into the deg with water, and the steam carries that unmistakable petrichor into sandalwood oil.
It is the most Kannauj of all attars - nowhere else makes it - and smells exactly like the first rain hitting a hot courtyard. Quiet, cool, and astonishingly calming. Wonderful in summer.
