Kannauj rose, fifteen passes into sandalwood
Damask roses from growers along the Kali river are picked before sunrise in March and April and are in the deg within the hour. Each batch is distilled into the same bhapka of Mysore sandalwood oil fifteen times over, until the oil is so full of rose that it turns a pale gold.
It opens green and almost lemony, like a petal bruised between fingers, then deepens into honeyed rose and finally into creamy sandalwood that lasts the day. The attar most often given at weddings in Awadh, and the one to start with.
