Trek-ready checklist

Hampta Pass in five days, and what to carry over it

Hampta crosses from the green Kullu side to the bare, cold Lahaul side at 4,270 m, usually between June and September. Nights at Balu ka Ghera drop to around 0°C, the river crossings are knee-deep by afternoon, and monsoon cloud can sit on the pass all day. Pack for both valleys: a 50-60 L bag with a rain cover, a bag rated to −5°C comfort, a taped shell and a pair of poles for the scree descent to Shea Goru.

A four-season dome tent dug into snow at a winter camp

Winter trek

Kedarkantha in December is a cold-night problem

The summit is a short, steep push from Juda ka Talab to 3,800 m, but the hard part is sleeping in snow at −10°C. Warmth comes from the ground up: a four-season tent that sheds snow load, a down bag rated to −15°C comfort, a merino base layer that stays warm when damp and a 650-fill jacket for the 4 a.m. start. Gaiters and a headlamp with a cold-rated battery finish the list.

The Himalaya Trailworks store and rental desk in Old Manali

Since 2009

A rental shed on Log Huts Road

Himalaya Trailworks started as a shed of hired tents and sleeping bags in Old Manali, run by two trek leaders tired of watching first-timers shiver through the night in gear rated for a car-camping weekend.

We still rent, and we still lead treks, but most of what we sell is now designed with us and made in Ludhiana, Tiruppur and Dehradun. Every piece goes over at least one high pass before it is listed - and if it fails, it does not make the catalogue.

  • Rated honestly. Sleeping bags list the comfort temperature, not the survival limit. Packs list litres including the lid.
  • Repaired in Manali. Zips, buckles, pole sections and tent seams fixed at our workshop for as long as you own the gear.
  • Rent before you buy. Try a tent or down bag on your first trek. The rental fee comes off if you buy within 30 days.
