A doorway toran cut from heavy cotton, block-printed in Pethapur and finished with eleven small cast brass bells along the lower edge. The bells are tuned low, so the door opening sounds like a note rather than a jangle.
The top edge is a stiffened sleeve rather than a loose string, which means it hangs as a straight line across the frame instead of sagging in the middle by day three of Diwali. This run has sold out; the next lot reaches the studio in early October.

Bought the 24-inch samai for my mother when she shifted to Bopal. It is genuinely heavy, it comes apart for cleaning, and she has lit it every morning since March. The antique finish has darkened a little and honestly it looks better for it.
