Rogan artist drawing with a stylus in Nirona

Artisan profile

Rizwan Khatri paints with boiled castor oil

Rogan art survives in one village - Nirona - and in one extended family. Rizwan Khatri draws freehand with a metal stylus, never touching the cloth, and folds the fabric to mirror the motif. A large piece takes him three weeks.

Craft notes

Sixteen steps, three rivers, one colour

Ajrakh is resist-printed and washed sixteen times, dyed in indigo and madder root, and it needs sweet water. After the 2001 earthquake turned the wells at Dhamadka saline, the Khatri printers built a new village - Ajrakhpur - and carried the craft eleven kilometres with them.

Dispatch in 7-10 days

Made to order, so no two are alike

Every piece is made to order in the cluster, so we dispatch in 7-10 days and write to you with the artisan’s name when it leaves Bhuj. Pan-India courier is free above ₹2,500 and international shipping is quoted at checkout; Cash on Delivery is available across India and a GST invoice is included with every order. Because these are handmade, colour, weave and finish will vary slightly from the photographs - that variation is the craft, not a defect.

The note with the printer’s name made it

The Ajrakh runner is beautiful, but what I keep telling people about is the card that came with it naming Juned Khatri and the village. Dispatch took nine days exactly as stated, and the GST invoice showed the artisan share. I have bought three more things since.

Waited seven months for the Patola

I grew up seeing Patola at weddings and always assumed the real thing was out of reach. Bharatbhai sent photographs from the loom every few weeks. The reverse is identical to the front, which is the test. Expensive, and completely fair.

Cushion is lovely, do read the size note

The Suf embroidery is finer than anything I have found in Delhi emporiums and the mirrors are properly set, not glued. My only note is that the cover ran about a centimetre small against my insert - they did say handwork varies, so read that line seriously.

The bells actually ring as a set

Ordered the set of three copper bells on a whim and they genuinely sound tuned to each other. Paid Cash on Delivery, arrived in Kochi in five days after dispatch, packed in cloth and straw rather than plastic. Ordering the brass lamp next.
