Suf is the most demanding of the Kutchi embroidery styles. It is counted from the back of the cloth, thread by thread, with no drawn outline - the embroiderer holds the geometry in her head and works in reverse, so a miscount cannot be corrected without unpicking the motif.
Worked by Hansiben Rabari and her daughter in Sumrasar Sheikh over nine days on hand-loomed cotton, with a mirror set at each junction. Rabari and Ahir styles are available in the same size; Ahir uses looser chain stitch and larger mirrors, Suf is tight and angular. Tell us if you would like both to be worked by the same hand for a pair.
