Rogan is painted with a paste made by boiling castor oil for twelve hours and quenching it in cold water, then mixing the resulting resin with mineral pigment. The artist lifts a thread of it on a blunt metal stylus and lays it onto the cloth without the stylus ever touching the surface, drawing in the air above the fabric.
Rizwan Khatri drew this piece freehand over three weeks in Nirona, then folded the cloth to print its mirror image on the other half - the traditional way a Rogan motif is doubled. Only one extended family still practises the craft. This edition is sold out; join the waitlist and we will write when the next one comes off the frame.
