A studio on the west bank
Contemporary brass, copper and puja objects, drawn in Ahmedabad and made to be used every day.
Aangan Living started in 2016 with a single complaint: the puja corner in most Indian homes is full of objects nobody designed. Inherited pieces are beautiful, but everything bought new is either a tourist souvenir or a plastic stand-in. We set out to make the third thing - objects with a clear, modern line that still behave the way ritual objects need to behave.
Everything begins as a drawing in the studio off Ashram Road. Cast pieces go to foundries in Rajkot and Moradabad, where they are made by lost-wax casting or sand casting depending on the form; spun copper is raised by hand on a lathe; marble inlay is cut and set in Makrana. We pay per piece rather than per kilo, which costs us more and lets the finisher slow down.
We are honest about the material. Brass tarnishes - that is what brass does - and anything that touches food or water carries a food-safe lacquer that we tell you how to look after. Our care card explains what to polish, what to leave alone, and what will look better in five years than it does today.
