Lac Ultra-Plat 39

Micro-rotor automatic, 7.8 mm

The thinnest automatic we have made: 39 mm across and 7.8 mm from crystal to caseback, made possible by the new calibre VH-30 with a platinum micro-rotor set flush into the bridges rather than stacked over them. The sunburst dial carries only applied indices and a signature - no date, no seconds.

The VH-30 is 3.2 mm thick and holds 72 hours of reserve. Its micro-rotor is engraved with a guilloché sunray, and the bridges are frosted rather than striped, so the finishing reads differently from every other Valmont through the caseback.

    Eleven seconds in a month

I logged the Lac 38 against an atomic reference for thirty days: plus eleven seconds in total, well inside the published −2/+4. Winding it each morning has become a ritual, and the 70 hours means a weekend off the wrist is no problem.

They serviced my father’s 1974 piece

A VH-01 that had not run in twenty years. The atelier replaced the mainspring and two jewels, left the patinated dial exactly as it was, and sent photos of the movement before and after. Not cheap, but I would not trust it to anyone else.

    An honest tool watch

Over a hundred dives on the Abysse 300 and the bezel still clicks cleanly through all 120 positions. The rubber strap channels really do stop it sticking. Lume fades faster than I would like after an hour in the dark, hence the only nitpick.

    GMT done properly

Jumping the local hour on landing without stopping the watch is exactly what I wanted. The bracelet micro-adjust is brilliant on long-haul flights. I would have liked a slightly thinner case, but it sits well under a cuff.
