Pack sizes & rates

We sell by weight, so we price by weight

Every item on this shop carries one rate. The packet price is that rate multiplied by what is in the packet, and the per-kilo figure is printed beside it so you can compare us with anyone else on the road.

  1. 1One rate per itemThe chakki does not care whether you buy 100 g or 5 kg - the rate is the same and the milling date is the same.
  2. 2Pick the pack you finishGround spice loses its oils on your shelf, not ours. Buy the size your kitchen gets through in a season.
  3. 3Per kilo on every shelfEach card shows the pack price and what it works out to per kilo or per litre, before you add it.

Sourcing & Milling

We buy whole, we mill small

Chilli comes from the Byadgi cold store in Karnataka and the Guntur yard in Andhra, cumin and coriander from the Unjha market an hour from here. Everything arrives whole, is cleaned and sun-dried on our terrace, and is milled on a stone chakki in ten-kilo lots so the oils stay in the spice instead of in the packing shed.

Pickle Season

Six weeks in May, and then it is over

Rajapuri mangoes come in from Talala and Junagadh in the first week of May and the whole family moves to the terrace: cutting, salting, sun-curing for four days, then filling jars with our own ghani groundnut oil. Athela Marcha and lemon follow in June. We make what the season gives us and when a batch is finished, it is finished until next year.

What the kitchens say

Nineteen years of the same chilli powder

The colour holds when it goes into hot oil and nobody at home starts coughing, which is how you know there is nothing but Byadgi and Teja in the packet. The milling date on the pouch is always within the week.

    The mango pickle travels well

My mother has been sending me this jar every June since I moved. It reached Pune in four days, sealed properly with the oil still covering the pieces, and it tastes exactly like her terrace in Rajkot.

    Atta is excellent, order early

The rotli stays soft for hours and the flour smells like actual wheat. Only thing to know is that they mill after you order, so allow a day extra - worth it, but do not order on the morning you have run out.

Ghani oil is the real thing

Took the 5 L tin on the monthly subscription and paid Cash on Delivery without any trouble. It smells of roasted groundnut, goes cloudy in winter like my grandmother said it should, and one tin lasts us five weeks.
