The Hackney bouquet of blush dahlias and rosehip, hand-tied in brown paper

In season this month

October is dahlias, hips and the first frost

The dahlia beds in Kent are at their heaviest now, and they will keep giving until the first hard frost - usually the last week of the month. Around them the hedgerows turn: rosehips, crab apples, copper beech and spindle berries. We buy what is best on the Monday call with our growers and build the week’s bouquets around it, so what you receive is what October actually looks like.

The Weekly Stem

A different bouquet every week, chosen by the season

Tell us the size and the day; our florists do the rest. Every delivery is built from that week’s best British stems, so no two are the same - a jug of sweet peas in June, dahlias and hips in October, forced narcissi and dried grasses in January. Skip a week, pause for a holiday or cancel in two clicks.

How every Wildstem box arrives

  • British-grown first

From March to November every stem we can buy in Britain, we do - from eleven small farms across Kent, Sussex, Cornwall and Lincolnshire.

  • Plastic-free, foam-free

Compostable paper, cornstarch water pouches and paper-string ties. We have never used floral foam and never will.

  • A care card in every box

Written for that week’s stems, so you know which ones to re-cut, which to dry and how long each will last.

Care card · No. 41

Make them last

  1. 1Snip 2 cm off every stem at an angle with sharp scissors.
  2. 2Strip any leaves that would sit below the water line.
  3. 3Fresh, cool water every two days, with a pinch of flower food.
  4. 4Keep away from radiators, sunny windows and the fruit bowl.

The Wildstem workshop in a railway arch on Mare Street, buckets of stems on the floor

Mare Street, Hackney - since 2017

A flower shop that buys from fields, not auctions

Wildstem began on a Sunday stall at the bottom of Columbia Road, selling buckets of whatever Hattie Lowe’s Kent cutting garden had produced that week. By the end of the first summer a waiting list had formed for the stall - so we took a railway arch on Mare Street and built a cold room in the back.

Most British florists still buy most of their stems through the Dutch auctions. We buy direct from eleven growers within a day’s drive, pay them before the flowers are cut and plan our bouquets around their beds. In winter we top up with Dutch and Italian growers we have visited ourselves - and say so on the care card.
