Before you pick a bat
Size by height. Grade by grain.
A bat that is too long costs more runs than a cheaper willow ever will. Stand your cricketer up straight, measure, and read across. Weights are typical pick-ups - we weigh every bat and can find you one a couple of ounces either side.
| Size | Player height | Age (guide) | Bat length | Typical weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Size 4 | 4′9″ - 5′0″ | 9-10 | 31″ | 2lb 2oz |
| Size 5 | 5′0″ - 5′3″ | 10-11 | 32″ | 2lb 4oz |
| Size 6 | 5′3″ - 5′6″ | 12-13 | 32¾″ | 2lb 6oz |
| Harrow | 5′6″ - 5′9″ | 13-15 | 33″ | 2lb 7oz |
| SH | 5′9″ - 6′2″ | Adult | 33½″ | 2lb 8-12oz |
| LH | 6′2″ + | Adult | 34½″ | 2lb 9oz + |
SH: Short Handle · LH: Long Handle · Harrow sits between Size 6 and SH.
From cleft to crease
Graded by the grain, not by the sticker
Every cleft that comes into the workshop is counted, weighed and graded before it is shaped. Grade 1 English willow shows eight or more straight grains and almost no blemish; Kashmir willow is denser, harder-wearing and half the price. Each bat is then pressed, shaped by hand and - if you ask - knocked in for six hours with a mallet and raw linseed so it is ready for a new ball.
Knocking-in, in three overs
1st over
Oil the face
A thin coat of raw linseed on the face, edges and toe - never the splice - and 24 hours lying flat to soak in.
2nd over
Six hours with the mallet
Gentle taps building to firm strikes, edges rounded at 45°, the toe knocked last. Done by hand, one bat at a time.
3rd over
Tape, guard, old ball
Fibre tape on the edges, a rubber toe guard fitted, then an over of throw-downs with an old ball to check the face.

“Ordered a Harrow for my son after the size chart said so, and they still called to check his height. The bat came knocked in, with the edges taped, and he scored his first fifty with it.”
Manish Vaghela
Parent, Jamnagar
“We kit out forty under-14s every season. The quote came back the same day, the crests were sharp, and they split the order between our two grounds without fuss.”
Coach Imran Sheikh
Saurashtra Colts Academy, Rajkot
“Picked the Grade 1 at 2lb 9oz and it pings off the middle. Ten grains, dead straight, and lighter in the hands than the weight says.”

Ten grains and it pings
Asked for 2lb 9oz and they sent a photo of the face before it shipped. Ten straight grains, knocked in properly, edges taped. Middled the first ball I faced with it.

Forty kits, one invoice
Our academy orders all its whites and practice balls here. Quote on WhatsApp the same evening, crests printed well, and the GST invoice was right first time.

Size table was spot on
Went by height, not age, and the Harrow fits my son perfectly. Paid cash on delivery. Took four days rather than three, but it was knocked in so I did not mind.

Helmet fits like it was measured
Measured above the eyebrows as the guide said and the Small fits without the liner pinching. The grille adjusts easily and the gap is tight.

Since 1994
A pressing room off Gondal Road
Harshad Parmar started Crease in 1994 with a hand press, a draw knife and a stack of Kashmir willow clefts in a garage off Gondal Road. He made bats for the tennis-ball leagues that ran in every Rajkot society compound, and repaired the ones that came back cracked.
The workshop now grades English willow from seasoned clefts as well, and his daughter runs the shop floor. The rules have not changed: every bat is weighed in front of you, every grain is counted, and nothing goes out that has not been pressed and shaped by hand.
