Eight colours, matched across everything we make

We dye our own webbing to a card of eight colours and match every glaze, felt and canvas to it. Cobalt is the same cobalt on a collar, a bowl and a bed, so a set looks like a set and a new piece always goes with the last one. Four colours are permanent; the others change with the seasons.

Every colour is dyed to our own card at a mill in North Carolina and matched across webbing, leather, canvas and glaze, so a cobalt collar is the same cobalt as the bowl.

Everything with a stitch in it is cut and sewn in our studio on Union Street, in batches of two hundred. Small runs mean we can test every buckle, rework a pattern the week a customer tells us it rubs, and never sit on a warehouse of unsold stock.

A design studio that happens to make dog collars

Hound & Hall started when Nell Hall, a graphic designer, could not find a collar for her rescue lurcher Otto that she did not want to cover up. She drew one in the colours of the posters on her studio wall, had it sewn by a sail-maker in Red Hook and sold the first fifty from a folding table at the Brooklyn Flea.

Today we are eleven people in a studio on Union Street. We cut and stitch everything with a seam in it ourselves, in batches of two hundred, and work with a small circle of makers for the rest: a stoneware pottery in the Hudson Valley, a felt mill in Maine and a brass foundry in Connecticut.
