Autumn introductions - the Marlow modular system is now in the Brooklyn showroom

Two rooms, one drawing board

An architectural furniture house working between a Copenhagen studio and a Brooklyn workshop.

Cabinetmakers cutting mortise-and-tenon joints in the Brooklyn workshop

Formfield was founded in 2012 by Ines Bregendahl, a cabinetmaker trained at Rud. Rasmussen, and Marcus Vey, an architect who had spent a decade detailing houses he could not furnish. Their first object was the Vessel lounge chair, and it took two years - most of it spent on a back angle that is now 28 degrees and has never been altered.

We build from four material families: FSC-certified American white oak and black walnut, powder-coated steel, Tivoli travertine, and undyed wool. Frames are joined with mortise-and-tenon and draw-bored where the load asks for it; nothing in the catalogue relies on a cam lock or a veneered panel. Upholstery is sewn in Brooklyn over eight-way hand-tied springs and a kiln-dried hardwood frame.

Because each piece is cut when it is ordered, lead times run from two weeks for lighting to fourteen weeks for the modular seating. We would rather tell you the true date than hold a warehouse full of guesses. Every structural element carries a ten-year guarantee, and we refinish, reupholster and re-cane anything we have made, for as long as you own it.

What customers say

“We specified the Halden table for a client in Cobble Hill four years ago. It has since survived two kids and a flood, been refinished once, and the joints have not moved a millimetre.”
Naomi Okonjo - Principal, Okonjo Studio
“The sofa took thirteen weeks and I would wait again. The bouclé is dense enough that it still reads flat after a year, and the frame does not creak.”
Theo Mensah - Client, Fort Greene
