What you actually need for week one

Our midwife-reviewed list is shorter than most, on purpose. A handful of sleepsuits in two sizes, three muslins, one sleeping bag, a gentle wash and a good barrier balm will see you through the first fortnight. Everything else can wait until you know your baby.

Size by age & weight

Every label carries a weight and height range as well as an age, because babies rarely read the calendar. Go by weight first; if they sit between two sizes, choose the bigger one.

Since 2017

Started at a kitchen table in Bristol

Little Fern began when Ruth Okafor, a neonatal nurse, couldn’t find a sleepsuit soft enough for her son’s sensitive skin that didn’t also come covered in slogans. She had her first run of twenty knitted from organic cotton and sold them to friends from her kitchen in Bedminster.

Today we make a short range of essentials - sleepwear, muslins, bath and feeding - and we still test every new fabric and formula on real families before it goes on sale. If it isn’t soft, simple and genuinely useful, we don’t make it.
